NOTHING SPECIAL
A whole day to myself and I didn't do anything special...unless you count being completely selfish and not doing anything special.

The clocks went back last night, but my brain's influence over my body was negligent...I still woke up early and then couldn't get back to sleep. It's disconcerting for someone who defines the essence of weekend as the chance to sleep in. And here it is a quarter to nine and my eyelids are trying to clang closed: end of the day! Go to bed! SLEEP. Stupid eyelids. Stupid brain. It's Daylight Savings Lag. One hour turns you into a zombie and it takes a minute a day for the next sixty days to recover.

It was sunny in spurts, every now and then the light would brighten and the pumpkin across the street would glow. I spent several hours working on the 2014 calendars for the AWC website. Putting in the dates, members' birthdays and holidays from both the American and Swedish calendars. I think this is the first time that I've seen Halloween listed on the Swedish online calendar: progress!

A family around the block is supposed to be taking over the neighborhood trick-or-treating, but she asked me to update the letter and print it out along with the pumpkin signs since they don't have a printer and she just had a baby and it didn't feel like I was handing it over when I was still doing half the work. They havent even distributed the flyers yet and it's only 4 days away...cutting it a bit close, but hey! All I have to do now is hand out candy. Unless my daughter comes through on her threat to host a Halloween party for her closest 42 friends...EEK.

I haven't even gotten out the measly few Halloween decorations that we still have. I think our cobwebs finally bit the dust last year and went into the bin. I have a paper pumpkin garland and a couple of glow-in-the-dark plastic ghosts, and some other miscellaneous paraphernalia. I did buy a big pumpkin that's sitting out in the front, but who knows if I can convince the family teenagers to actually do something with it. If not, I'll carve it myself. :)

This week is Sportlov (school's autumn break), the end of October and only 1.5 months until my mom comes! Nearly time to start making some lists and checking them twice.

And here's my new favorite Halloween joke: Do zombies eat popcorn with their fingers? No, they eat the fingers separately.

From Megsie

It sounds like you were a PRODUCTIVE slug this weekend! I have been busy with sick kids (STILL! Enough already!) and trying to get Sarah to socialize. I took her and a friend to the football game last night. I don't think they talked to anyone but themselves despite the mob of sixth graders present. Weird. I couldn't wait to go to football games and hang out with friends. I think I was the only one there with a Textbook in her lap. Not that it is embarrassing to my daughter. She couldn't care less. I would have been mortified.

My kids decorated the house for Halloween. We haven't carved pumpkins yet, and we are finalizing Trick or Treating plans. Man. This fall is going by quick! Yikes!

Re: From Megsie

I was more productive than sluggy, sadly. But it was all puttering-about-the-house productive...nothing really major. And reading. And movie-watching, and Saturday night with my friends over.

Hope your kids get better STAT! No more sickies!

I haven't even bought a pumpkin- as I've usually put a couple outside for decorations. I've never had any trick or treater's at this house - not one in 18 years - so have lost the need/desire to decorate.
But I loved your Halloween joke. Love, Lizardmom

Not one in 18 years and there are kids right across the street and down the road. SAD!

Enjoyed your post and your joke, Ms. Slug.
Oh, and I HATE the time change. We have it next weekend.
A minute a day for the next 60 days... never thought of it that way, but sounds true.

Russia abolished it along with some other countries. YOu could always move there. :P

I might have too! I am fed up with this time change business.

Oh, or Hawaii or Arizona. Neither of those states do the darn thing either.

Wait, were you listening to Lou Reed before knowing he died yesterday or after? If before, I'd say you were clairvoyant.

I bought two pumpkins for carving yesterday. I always wait until late because otherwise the squirrels attack them for the seeds, though some years this has left me with slim pickings. I scored two good ones though, and only $6 a piece so win, win.

After. I was very sad to hear of his passing. I saw him in concert years ago and it was actually one of the best concerts I ever went to, though I was very skeptical beforehand.

I haven't even gotten out the Hallowe'en decorations here at work, sadly -- not enough time. Life is what happens when you're making other plans!

We change the clocks here this coming weekend. I am looking forward to the sleep, but not to the having to drive home from work in the dark starting on Monday. :-P
