NEVER SAY NEVER
If someone had told me 8 years ago that I would one day eat pea soup with relish gusto*, I would have laughed them out of the room. As a child, I once threw up pea soup AT THE TABLE as revenge on my father for making me eat it in the first place. This was before I met Swedish pea soup, where the peas are not green and slimey. I've had varying degrees of acceptance with the Swedish pea soups over the past 8 years, but the one I had on Thursday was by far the best yet. Swedes eat their pea soups on Thursdays and they put mustard in it, and their pea soup usually has bacon and perfectly softened yellow peas and leeks and afterwards you traditionally get pancakes with strawberry jam and whipped cream, but we had apple pie and vanilla ice cream which was way better. It was a goodbye party lunch for my friend Debbie, the one who is moving back to Canada for a year with her children. We all chipped in to buy her a gorgeous hammered silver bracelet from Ljunghusen to remind her to come home.

Last night I attended my first ever not-tupperware party, affectionately referred to as fuckerware, and it was a hoot. We joked that we should have waited to buy Debbie's present until LAST night, as her husband is staying here in Sweden during her year-long sojourn and she won't see him again until Christmas vacation. :D

There were 25 wired, giggling women listening to the presentation and passing the vibrators back and forth. Anders had given me the hairy eyeball when I asked him if there was anything in particular he wanted me to purchase, but 2 friends told me their husbands had supplied them with wish lists for the evening. :) I had to leave a bit early (after making my purchases, of course) because Anders had a hockey-bockey game at 10:15, and just before he left, he came into the computer room, with his hockey socks and pads and cup over his sweatsuit and struck a pose and said, "Who needs sex toys when you've got ME?" He's so right. :)

Tonight is sushi with galestorm, woo hoo!

We planted japanese lanterns in our front garden this spring, because japanese lantern seed pods are the PERFECT table decoration for Halloween parties, along with red berries and autumn leaves, and even though I have a small box of them that my brother and Simone kindly sent us last year, you can never have too many japanese lanterns, right? um. We have TONS. Our 3 plants have exceeded all expectations, and gone bananas, and we have japanese lanterns coming out our ears. Me so happy.

Things You Might Not Know About Me: I will refuse to eat black-eyed peas, even as a guest. I rarely make my bed, preferring to close the bedroom door if necessary. I'm left-handed. If I didn't have children, I could easily sleep until noon on weekends.

Must Still Find Time For: Painting my new art desk (yay!), editing neverending photos for family website update, dusting.

Fuckerware!! Never heard it called that before, that is fantastic! :)

Trust the swedes to assign a day for pea soup :) I love it, swedish and normal green murky stuff. I just had pumpkin soup for dinner - delish!

ooh! send me the recipe, I'm planning to use my pumpkins for dinner tomorrow and soup sounds perfect!

I used to refuse to eat blackeyed peas also, but I ended up eating them a few times for New Years for "luck", and now they've grown on me.

ew! actually, I'm not fond of peas and beans in general. Refried beans are completely disgusting, and lima beans and black-eyed peas are the 2 that I just refuse to do. I've tried them both in the past (forced as a child, oh the trauma! :) and hated them equally. I figure I'll eat just about anything else, but those are ones I don't WANT to have grow on me. :D

Fuckerware? Well what did you buy? Enquiring minds need to know.

Hee! Well, my purchase was pretty tame, I have to say. I looked at some other things that I hemmed and hawed over for quite awhile, but decided against finally... I bought warming massage oil with butterscotch scent and cactus-scented lubricant. Lovely smells!

Hey! A fellow lefty :)

Not sure if you saw my post to Gale but I'll be in Malmö on the 30th and would love to meet you :) Gale mentioned going for a 'fika' or something of that sort. I'll be free the whole afternoon (we're going to a party in the evening)

30th of October? That's our big Halloween party! Will you only be here that one day? I'd love to meet you, but it might have to be a quick one in the afternoon before I head over to help set up and decorate at the party location. I have to be there at 4 p.m....so how about 1 or 2? What did Gale say? I'll go look at her journal too.

The coily thing in front of JF is one of his sculptures. He made that one, I think, when he was taking a sculpture class, but he's actually quite a wonderful sculptor. But you'll see, at Christmas, since I intend to take many pictures of our creche, which he created, and post them. There will be a whole Christmas album.

Monkey Puzzle tree. Hmmmm. I don't know what sort of climate it needs. It might be too cool up there.

I just did some googling, and it appears to be on the endangered/threatened species lists. :( It's native to South America but grows in Britain as an ornamental, so I ought to be able to grow it here, if I can find one or seeds.

I'm looking forward to seeing more photos of JF's sculptures.

I heard of blackeyed peas, but never have seen nor eaten them. Had a good laugh though, with your husbands comment on "who needs sex toys when"

You would have laughed even harder had you beheld the sight yourself >:P

Why I do the Church Thing was good/fun. Thanks
How oh how did Thursday end up being the split pea soup day? There must be a story behind that one.

..."fuckerware!!?" hahaha

I have a great pumpkin soup recipe, but I'm afraid I can't find it and don't have time to look before hitting the road, so good luck on that one. Let us know how it comes out.

Have a great trip! :) There is something to do with the military in Sweden always serving pea soup on Thursdays, and everyone in Sweden is in the military for a year when they turn 18 (or so), and also, apparently the school cafeterias do it, too. Now it's standard fare at nearly every Swedish restaurant on Thursdays. :) Swedes are very big on sticking to food traditions.

My husband hates peas in every form. I wonder if he would like Swedish pea soup?

My bet is yes, because if I like it, anyone else who hates green peas will like it. Does he like chickpeas at all? It's so NOT pea soup as we Americans think of it, that it's hard to describe it to you as pea soup, because it totally gives the wrong idea.

I need to find an authentic Swedish recipe for pea soup. It sounds utterly delish. I already love pea soup (homemade) so yummmm. Bacon? Leeks? Mustard?! Bring it!

I didn't know people still had Tupperware partays. Purse or sex toy parties are so popular now. The Tupperware is to keep those sex toys fresh. With the patented *burp*.

Sooo very glad you posted that link about Japanese lanterns and mentioned planting them. There's gorgeous huge ones growing in the front side yard; my mother thinks they're weeds and wanted them ripped out. My father thought they were tomatillos. (Not that he'd eat them.) I thought they were gorgeous. Thank you for the Botanical Species In A Second lesson. :D

There are a gazillion recipes online if you google "Swedish pea soup", but I will see if I can get the recipe for the one I had on Thursday, it really was great. :)

I know there are lots of other home party products nowadays, but Sweden IS a bit behind :) Never heard of a purse party, but I bet that would be a lot of fun!

The japanese lanterns spread quite aggressively, though, that's probably the only thing that's "bad" about them. I love them!

Hmm.... sounds like my sort of party.

Love the phrase "hairy eyeball" (and I can see Anders doing it really well).

And snap on being left handed. I think all us smart people are :)

You would have loved it! Anders gives better hairy eyeball than anyone I know...although I bet you could give him a run for his money, haha! :D I'm SO GLAD YOU'RE BACK!!

Hejsan! ;-)

Hej there! I was just checking out your journal :) adding you!

Hi - I've just found your blog through Chuck's. I like your writing! Fun subjects. Your husband sounds funny! (in a good way)

I'll be back around now and again. Best wishes to you all the way across the world!

Goodness! Thanks very much! I'll swing by and take a peek at yours, too. :) I don't feel my subjects have been so fun lately, as mostly I've been stressing out about work and job hunting, hopefully I'll be returning to form now, though!
