THE DEVIL MADE ME DO IT
On the packaging of the frozen salmon and shrimp quiche I had for lunch today I received the following advice: "The best way to get rid of temptation is to fall for it." I may have to adopt that philosophy for awhile, even though experience has taught me that falling for a temptation doesn't necessarily mean you won't be tempted by the same thing again 2 minutes later...at least that's not how it works with M&Ms.

Temptation is such a strange thing. Temptation plus willpower equals decision. Why does it seem that we are always tempted by things that are BAD for us? Actions that hurt us or cause harm to our relationships, food that we know isn't healthy, things that make us sorry afterwards. We're enticed, and persuaded AGAINST OUR BETTER JUDGEMENT. How come when the choice is for something good or better, it's not called temptation?

If you're a recovering alcoholic, you're constantly being tempted to take a drink. But we don't say that you are also constantly being tempted to take the higher path of sobriety. Temptation, in our minds, always leads to downfall.

Sometimes I'm tempted, when driving on the outer beltway around Malmö, to just keep going all the way to infinity Copenhagen and beyond.
Sometimes I'm tempted to wallop my child when she's pitched a hissy fit and fallen into it.
Sometimes I'm tempted to eat the entire batch of chocolate chip cookies.
Sometimes I'm tempted to stay in bed ALL DAY.

I suppose you can be tempted by trival things too: an urge to bleach your hair blonde, for example. It seems the main definition of temptation is that it's for something you know deep down you shouldn't do for whatever reason. Maybe it's just the first step on the path to downfall, but if you're TEMPTED to it, then there is a little voice in your mind telling you, "Bad idea." If you just DECIDE to bleach your hair blonde and you aren't TEMPTED to it, then presumably you won't follow it up with leaving your husband for a younger man, getting a job in a strip joint and winding up on the streets. Now I am feeling the urge (ha!) to make a disclaimer to the effect that I know if you bleach your hair blonde you won't logically follow it with the steps outlined above. It was just an extreme example! So, don't be writing me a bunch of comments telling me how you bleached your hair blonde once and you aren't stripping for a living, already. Whatever.

Ha hahaha! I have no idea where I'm going with this post. I'm tempted to just leave it at that and see what happens.

Giving in to temptation raises your level of excitement and lowers your level of sanity. LONG LIVE TEMPTATION :D

I have a t-shirt that says under an evil smiley face 'The only way to get rid of temptation is to give into it'

Wanna borrow it for a bit? :)

the philosophy of temptation

oooh. Lizardek-- this was such an intriguing post. I'm going to be turning it over in my head all day. Imagine the power if we started using the word TEMPT aligned with activities that are GOOD for us . . I'm tempted to get in shape, I'm tempted to go to that art exhibit, I'm tempted to say only kind things today . . . would those be temptations easy to resist or could the pendulum swing? I love me your ruminating mind . . . *smile* ~bluepoppy

Re: the philosophy of temptation

I think I'll join you in those temptations! :D

Thank you for the sweet birthday wishes! So far, it's a good one. :)

you tempted me to comment, even though i have absolutely nothing to say.

forget good and bad! let's hear it for nonsensical temptations!

examples:

~ the temptation to wear odd shoes
~ the temptation to smile at dogs
~ the temptation to sneeze after every sentence

;D

hee hee!

~ the temptation to wear mismatched socks
~ the temptation to bat my eyes at cashiers
~ the temptation to do the hokey pokey!

"Why does it seem that we are always tempted by things that are BAD for us?"

Hhmm.. Well, I've often found myself tempted to do more of the "good" things. Usually the word in relation to the 'good' rather than the 'bad' comes up if I have to weigh a decision rather than just going ahead, As in ' I'm tempted to do this good thing for my neighbor, the community, fill in the blank,; however, do I have the time/can I make the time to do it? Or I'm tempted to do this fun thing, but can I afford it? Or I'm tempted to do this self nurturing thing, but... etc

So, I don't find the word/concept to fall more into the tempted to do "BAD" things category.

On the other hand, your post is timely for me. I like the advice and it's fun and thought provoking to be tempted to stretch into more fun, out of dead routines, toward more M&M's (just joking.. I can't eat them)

And I am being tempted by small things that aren't good for me yet look very enticing in the moment. Plus, a larger thing, FG (you know what I mean here don't you?) I was thinking about my experience with FG yesterday when I opened our post.... messages from the universe.

So, my question to you: Beyond the advice/fortune on your salmon, was there some temptation that prompted this post?

No, there wasn't anything other than the advice on my frozen food. And if you can't take the advice of your frozen food, where else can you turn, I ask ya?! :D

And I know you are being tempted now, but I agree with you that some of things might be good things...and I guess that sometimes I am tempted to say YES to things when I know I DON'T have the time or commitment available to them...even when they are good things :)

"And if you can't take the advice of your frozen food, where else can you turn, I ask ya?! :D"

I whole heartedly agree with this statement!

Perhaps temptations are karmic tests ... not so much for anyone else to judge the outcome, but rather ourselves ... to test our willpower and our sense of desire.

yes, sort it all out in the karmic temptation wash, so to speak. That's been my recent experience. A temptation clarified for me what I really want and don't want. I already knew, but the sweet temptation confirmed any confusing I might have harbored.

I'm tempted to be snarky, but I resisted and am a picture of sweetness and light. And pigs might fly...

lol. Too bad you don't have an icon of hell freezing over. :)

DIS-A-PPOINTED!

Well, maybe I could do jokes...

A font walks into a bar.
The bartenders says: "Hey, we don't serve your type in here!"

A mushroom walks into a bar.
The bartender says: "Hey, you look like a fun guy!"

Humour me. It's been that kind of day.

I just nominated you for a bloggy in the best European blog category. Hope you win!

What?! You're NUTS! Omigod, how flattering!!! :)

I just can't say NO. So I really liked that quote about temptation. And I fear for my next life.
