ALONE AGAIN, NATURALLY
A few years ago, at my previous job, I was forced by circumstances to move from an office of my own into an open landscape cubicle environment under very crowded conditions. I hated it. I hated it so much it colored everything about my day, my week, my life. It made me grumpy and sad.

After about 7 months in hell, our company closed down and we were all thrown on the job market where I, happily, was extremely fortunate in finding not one but TWO jobs that were perfect and ended up having to make a choice. The only real drawback about my new job, when I first started, was that I was going to have to share a room. At least it was only with 1 person, I thought, and not 40 people, which was what my prior situation had been.

With a creative job that requires a lot of concentration and time to brainstorm and work in a very focused manner, sharing office space adds a great deal of difficulty, pressure and tension to my job. But, after only a few months, my roommate moved out to his own office and I had the big room to myself for awhile. A short time passed and I ended up with another roommate, the assistant to the department, but things didn't work out and she left at the beginning of this year. Rather quickly after that her replacement took the other desk in my room and I was once more a roommate...

until today.

WHEE!

I have MY OWN OFFICE again! ALL BY MYSELF! The view is slightly less than desired (having gone from a sliver of trees, hill and grass before to a view of the building wing across the way now) but I am SO HAPPY. After 2 years, I thought it was only fair that it was someone else's turn to share, and thankfully my boss agreed with me.

YAY!

I can totally totally relate to the need for having an office to yourself. I'm delighted for you! Now YOU get to choose the lighting level. YOU get to decide to have music or no music. YOU get to pass gas without anyone noticing (except that every time you do someone chooses that very moment to pay you a visit).

hahaha! so true! :D

omigoodness- how cool your own office again! Congrats!

Yay! I'm happy for you. I'm of the type that does best with a bit of solitude as well. I don't have my own department at work, but I do kind of have my own space that is separate from the other workers and they all have asked me if I get lonely there. I am always a bit shocked by the question because I'm not at all lonely and it would have been the last thing to come to my mind. Quite the opposite, I like having my own space and being able to totally concentrate and keep things ordered in my mind without being interrupted. haha

I'm constantly interrupted by my own visitors as it is, but to be interrupted all the time by both mine AND someone else's was just too much.

At my current job we went from being up to 10 people crammed into one large basement room (though a large basement room of a small New England house from the 1950s is not that big), to all having our own offices on the second floor. I happen to have the largest one because I used to have two roommates and they have both since left. No one else could be bothered to switch so I kept it all to myself!

Lucky you! :)

yay indeed!

Oh yes-- your own damn space! It makes a huge difference and I hope you get to "customize" it with all your own images, etc so that it is you you you. So glad this happened-- next they'll be bringing you sushi for lunch!

Congrats. Ones own space is ultra important. Glad you got it back.

hurray! i am such a big fan of personal space...

and thank you :D

Hooray for being alone! And good for you for speaking up for what you wanted.

power to the empty offices, and the more power to the girl who makes it happen. Now back to work, and....hey you're just using the private time to surf the net ;)

YES! I'm so happy for you, with your new office kingdom. You so deserve it.

Yesterday I had to SNAP MY FINGERS at uproarious people in my office- I was on the phone, and they were laughing very loudly. It wasn't pretty, but it was really quite funny, after they got over the shock that I had snapped at them, literally!.

LOL! Their faces must have been a study!

All jobs I have had including layout and writing (in other words creative) have been in office landscapes so I know perfectly well what you are talking about. I am the kind of person who needs quiet around me when I concentrate. Like now, when I study, I have to turn down the sound of the TV. Any sound, as little as it may be, distracts and annoys me! I was never one of those teenagers who needed background sound to study, which was the norm at least when I was young. But then, I have always been different.. ;)

So you of all people know how frustrated I have been at work... :)
