zird is the word [userpic]
IT WAS EITHER THIS OR A MEME
It's been thundering and lightning all evening. And writing that sentence just made me realize that whenever we say that, we are using the word lightning as a VERB, just because it has an ing on the end. Really, it should be lightninging, which I just sat here and said several times out loud to see how it sounded, prompting my husband to say, "what?" in a confused tone from the living room.

Last night I had dinner with my oldest girlfriends in Sweden, the women I became friends with first after I moved here, that is...it's nothing to do with their (or my) age. I don't know what to call this group, although a couple of them are calling these dinners "mentor dinners," but that name sounds weird to me. I guess I could refer to them as the "First Friends." Except for Kathey, my bestest bud who moved away many years ago, these are the same friends that I have kept for the entire going-on-10-years I've lived in Sweden. We've been through a lot together: club drama, pregnancies, moving, parties, cancer scares, job changes, job searches, encroaching blindness, illness, and a lot of love, listening and laughter. There was a lot of the three Ls last night. I needed that.

I slept in this morning and yet! so much accomplished today. *pause to pat myself on the back* Not only did I vacuum the ENTIRE house and got the kids to clean up the kids department in record time, I cleaned the fish tank. And then I went to the mall and bought more fish: 10 neon tetras and 5 stripey barbs. Beta, our Siamese Fighting fish died last week, and I was actually kind of sad because he was the only fish with any personality in the tank. He lived to be over a year old. I don't know the average life span of the typical aquarium fish, but I think a year is pretty respectable. There are 4 other fish in the tank that we bought at the same time as Beta...I wonder how long they will last.

Also, I bought a new frying pan and a spoon rest, which we have not had for over a year since the last one got broken and I couldn't find a replacement for ages and finally had to order one. And I bought a pair of pajamas, and a sweater and a black sleeveless tank. Then I came home and worked on the AWC directory, sending emails to people to check their contact info.

For dinner Anders made artichokes and rice and chicken with wok broccoli & sugar snap peas. It was so good! And then I worked some more on AWC stuff, namely, calling people to see if they were planning on renewing their membership. I called 35 people. Okay, a few didn't answer, and a few I left messages with, but still! Whee!

Now I shall either edit the AWC directory some more or edit my book. Or both. Or neither. Maybe I'll go read instead. MAYBE I'll work on my poor, sad, neglected collage book, for which I also bought some fun ephemera today just to make it up to it that it's been sitting sad and lonely on my art table for so long.

I KNOW! Do I not have an exciting life?! What shall I do tomorrow? I think I will do some of it some more, plus add a walk. :)

I'm so glad that you are having such a wonderful time. I believe time with important people in our lives brings up such feelings. Here's to more such days in your life! Love, Lizardmom

We're scheduling our dinners every 2 months :) That was the 3rd one, so we're doing pretty good so far. We've all committed to making the chosen dates a priority on the calendar. :)

For dinner Anders made artichokes and rice and chicken with wok broccoli & sugar snap peas.

That sounds delicious! I've been trying to figure out what to cook for dinner for hours - looks like I've got some inspiration at last.

It had 4 of my favorite foods!

I think I do say lightinging when I use that expresssion...

Think you could hit Anders up for the artichoke, rice and chicken recipe?

Artichokes: rip the stems off (do not cut them, except just a tad to get them started), and boil in water with salt and lemon juice for 40 minutes. We serve them with mayonnaise, but a lot of people prefer melted butter.

Rice: Jasmine sticky rice prepared according to instructions.

Chicken with broccoli & sugar snap peas: boneless breasts of chicken sauteed with broccoli florets and sugar snap peas in an oyster teriyaki sauce (it was pre-packaged, sorry about that!)

Easy peasy!

That thunder and lightning storm was awesome!

I didn´t relaise you have been here for 10 years. That´s a milestone of adventures. I like to think of my girlfriends that I have made here as pieces of my life puzzle. Each of them have come into my life as I have needed them or maybe as they have needed me, when I hear that "click click" then I know that another piece of the puzzle has just fallen into place.

Well, I WAS jumping the gun a little bit, as my actual 10-year anniversary here isn't until January 11th, but still. Close enough! :) When I think back on everything that has happened in the past 10 years, it makes my mind boggle!

There are 4 other fish in the tank that we bought at the same time as Beta...I wonder how long they will last.

Also, I bought a new frying pan [..]

That passage made me chuckle! I also don't know how long is the expected life for those fish, but at least a year if they are healthy. I think the long lasting barbs I had were around for at least three, maybe five years or until I gave up on having an aquarium.

wow! really?? I had no idea that they would live THAT long!

Today I killed some time at a pet store. I was particulary amused by the note on one of their aquariums (translated):

"When was the last time you gave your guppy a new wife?"

Poor guppy if it is alone. Poor Mrs. Guppy if the owner on purpose adds new female elements of distraction into the water.

ha! We regularly buy new neon tetras but that's because they die, like, er...flies. They're not breeding in the tank, thank goodness. We had that problem years ago with a couple of gouramis: NEVER AGAIN. sheesh.

Hint to prevent breeding: only get fish of the same gender. Perhaps only females is the best choice. Some species are easier than others to see the difference.

I'm still amazed by your non-stop breeding gouramis, if the literature refers to them as somewhat difficult to breed. They tend to be a bit expensive; at least in the range 30-45 kr/each for youngsters depending on which kind of gourami it is. Maybe you could've started a side business: Liz' Gouramirama...

no way Jose, I was so glad to get rid of those fish! they were über-destructive and too aggressive. And as for being able to get only fish of the same gender: HAHAHA! yeah, right. :P

Lightninging...did you just make that up?! :)

I think I did! I'll never remember how to spell it, though :P
