WHERE WORDS FAIL, MUSIC SPEAKS*
Just the kind of day I needed after the week I've had. Waking at my own pace to frost and sunshine, puttering about, reading a bit here, cleaning a bit there, not really doing much of anything. Looking through Lego boxes with Martin to find all the different Lego people heads we have (41!), and having a delicious dinner of sushi out and then Melodifestivalen LIVE at Malmö Arena! There wasn't anyone on the line-up that I cared all that much about, so I could relax and enjoy the show without thinking too much about it. It was quite different from a regular concert, since it's televised live and a great deal of effort goes into making things go smoothly, but it was pretty seamless.

Apart from the row of VERY LOUD men talking right behind us through the show (until the lady next to Anders finally turned around and told them to shut up which saved me from having to do it) we all enjoyed it, and I was pleased that Malena won with her operatic rocker and thought she was darling with her obviously genuine surprise and pleasure at winning, though I'm not 100% sure that her song can 1) win the final or 2) win Eurovision.

I'm still not convinced that a music competition like this is really a fair thing to do at all, regardless of its popularity, and precisely BECAUSE of its popularity. I seldom think that the really good songs get a chance, and the way they have the competition set up now with the stupid extra duels makes it even less likely that the really good songs are able to pass the popularity contest side of things. Regardless, it's still a campy, silly lot of fun to watch.

These are the 2 songs I like best from the whole thing: I Got U performed by Rigo & The Topaz Sound featuring Red Fox, and La Voix performed by Malena Ernman. Neither one of them is a really typical song for Melodifestivalen, BUT that might be just why they have a better chance of winning the modern Eurovision contest than the usual pop-disco-schlager stuff.

Math Brain strikes again
Liz: *driving past gas station* OH man, I knew I should have bought gas this morning!
Martin: *from backseat* Why?
Liz: Because it was under 11 this morning and now it's 11.44! It's almost 12!
Martin: It didn't go up that much.
Liz: It's almost 12!
Martin: No, it's not. It's closer to 11 than to 12.
Liz: Is not.
Martin: Is too.
Liz: *very long pause* Well, it would be closer to 12 if it was a CLOCK.
Martin & Liz: *giggle madly*

I'm guessing the Melodifestivalen is like our American Idol??? How cool to see it live!

The Lego search is endless. Kyle has two tubs to paw through when looking for something. The sound is sometimes deafening! And the conversation with Martin: hilarious! Come on mom, get your math straight!

We have THREE giant plastic bins full of Lego. :) And my math is NEVER straight :D

Melodifestivalen is the Swedish competition to pick the song that will go to the Eurovision song contest. It's not exactly like American Idol...Sweden has their own Idol show.

There are 4 semi-finals of 8 songs each. From each one, 2 are chosen to go to the final, and 2 are chosen to "second chance", and 2 from the second chance semi-final go to the final as well, making it the 10 most-voted for songs that participate in the final (plus 1 extra this year which is chosen by an international jury & the Swedish population). The winner competes in the Eurovision song contest, which is 25 songs chosen from a potential 43 countries (last year 42 of them actually competed).

It's a HUGE deal in Europe (though the Eurovision contest now includes countries that aren't part of the actual European boundaries). Of those that compete, 5 of them are automatically guaranteed a place in the finals every year: Germany, UK, France, Spain and Russia. (Not 100% why this is, but suspect it's to do with money/sponsorship)

Approximately 100 million people watch the show every year and a millions call in and vote.

I liked Malena's song too. But my favourite is still Molly Sanden. :) She will not win though and would probably have to struggle in Eurovision - but to be fair ALL songs in Melodifestivalen this year would have to struggle in Eurovision. No matter what/who we send, I think Sweden won't even qualify for the final for the first time ever.

Of over 3000 sent in songs, these 32 were the best!? Gosh...

I know exactly what you mean. And I agree about the 3000 songs. If there are so many, why is it the same 4 songwriters for every bloody song??

"Well, it would be closer to 12 if it was a CLOCK."

I totally heart you.

I AM hopeless, aren't I? :D

Time vs money! You don't know how many times in my life I've gone through that myself. Of course there are 60 cents in a dollar and 100 minutes in an hour. It's like a broken part of my brain.

Ha! I am glad to know I am not alone! :D

First of all, I have to say thank you to you. I love to have a window on the world in a new spot that is a mystery to me. Wonderful wonderful.

I like that second song much more than the first, but I do really appreciate the Caribbean beat playing off the lead. And if you appreciate music so much I'm wondering if you saw the movie August Rush. We watched it last weekend and my heart cracks with the notice of music in the every day. Watch it if you can. (And forgive me the sentimentality.)

I have NOT seen it, but I will add it to the list of movies to check out. Have you seen Once? It's excellent and also feeds the music-loving soul. :)

I'm not interesting of popmusic at all, but interesting of cultural institiutions. How was it in Arena, was it full of people?

Yep, it sure was, totally full, even the box seats :)
