lizardek's obiter dictum lizardek Home Now Then Friends Info Ek Family
zird is the word [userpic]
My entire family is on vacation except for me. Martin has 8.5 weeks. Karin has 10 weeks. Anders changed his scheduled vacation time and took next week off, so he has 5 weeks off as of today. I'm still working next week (and as we speak, actually) but then I have 4 weeks off. And it's a 3-day weekend right now (as soon as I quit working, already). But still. 10...8.5...5...4...I think I'm getting the short end of the vacation stick.*

It's 9 pm and the sun is still high in the sky. It's shining right through the bedroom windows and through the deck door into my eyes. Anders is sleeping on the porch sofa. Karin is making her bedroom door squeak. Martin is building his own level on Little Big Planet 2. Tomorrow we are going to a friend's house for midsummer and we have 5 big bottles of pop and 5 liters of self-picked strawberries, 3 containers of cream, and vanilla ice cream to take with us.

We have tickets to Iceland. We have hostel rooms booked for 5 of the 7 nights. But now we need to know what to actually SEE and DO in Iceland. Have YOU been there? The only thing we're sure of, besides the Blue Lagoon, is the Black Falls. Otherwise, any and all suggestions are extremely welcome!

*Apologies to all American readers who are glaring at me right now from their 2 weeks of vacation.
mood: cheerful
music: none. It's REALLY quiet in here right now

One of the primary reasons for why I think it sucks living in the US, is because of the lack of vacation. Seriously, every American should weep when they get to know how much vacation you get in Sweden compared to the US...

I agree. Unless you work for a school or a bank, 2 weeks is pretty much it. I wouldn't go back!

a drive around the southwestern peninsula can be a nice and desolate teaser. and you can make a stop at the blue lagoon.

do the golden circle tour with gullfoss, geysir and thingvellir.

go horse riding!

taste local quisine. fermented shark and smoked sheep heads. :)

and there are whale watching tours from reykjavik.

snaefellsjökull on the penisnula north of reykjavik is where jules verne placed the entrance to the center of the earth. :)

i don't know if you can get much further away from the city with just a week, but a snow mobile tour on on a jökul might be nice?

oooh! thanks for all the great ideas! I really want to do the whale-watching. We're thinking 2 nights elsewhere than the capitol so we'll see what we can come up with :)

Iceland! I really want to go there some day.

It's been on my list for awhile, and I've heard so many people say nice things about it :)

Iceland, just stay a good distance from the those pesky erupting volcanoes! (Is there an e in that word?) I spent a number of hours in downtown Reykjavik once and was amazed at how small it seemed. The road from the airport looks like you imagine the surface of the moon to be.

I am on two weeks of vacation but I actually get close to five weeks a year, I just can never take more than two together. There's not a policy or anything but my boss gets twitchy if I'm gone for this long and the amount of work to tackle before leaving and after you get back gets too big to make more really restful. Honestly, if I could take five weeks off straight, I'd never want to go back.

You CAN take off 5 weeks here...MOVE to Sweden, Ellen!!

I am not at all glaring at you...because I am one of the lucky ones! So excited for you that your Iceland trip is almost all planned. How fun to have something to look forward to! I am looking forward to hearing all about it!

Re: From Megsie

I'm starting to get excited about it, too :)

Ooo, have you read those Reykjavik mysteries? I am trying to pump my brain for titles and Author. Drat, several months ago I stopped logging books read...

Rather than glare, I think people should take up the cause! But I doubt it will ever come round in the US, the longer vacation times that is. No matter to me, except the availability of my friends to play with. My roomie has the summer off each year, but it's not paid.

Haven't read whatever mysteries you're talking about, most likely. I rarely read mysteries. :)

Oh well, they took place in Iceland, so your upcoming trip brought them to mind.

Iceland? I'm so jealous. It's on my lifelist. Cannot wait for your photos... Also, ah-hem. Vacation schmation. I have a measly week off. During which my fingers will never stop typing.

ONE week!!? Dude, that stinks.
