STRESS CANNOT EXIST IN THE PRESENCE OF A PIE*
It was sunny and blue by the time we left work (Anders picked me up after picking up Martin because my car is in for repairs) but I was in a seminar all afternoon so the weather was moot. I hope it's warming up for real now, though...I would like for it to be spring already. Martin and I went for a walk on Saturday, and it was also warm and blue and we saw snowdrops and smörblommor and crocuses, and the tiny green leaves of what will be miniature violets along a rock wall, and teeny tiny lilac buds. We have to wait until May for the lilacs but just knowing they're on the way makes me happy.

We had Pie Night on Friday. I took half the day off, left work after lunch to go to the grocery store and buy ingredients for two taco pies and all the paper/plastic serving stuff: napkins, cutlery, plates, sodas, for 48 people. FORTY-EIGHT people!! When I had told Anders a few days earlier how many people were signed up, I just got the hairy eyeball. It's, I think, the fourth year we've hosted Pie Night. So anyway, I came home and started on the final prep work, cleaning, baking the cookie bottoms for two fruit pizzas, etc. and then I checked email.

"We're sick"

"Our kid/s is/are sick"

"I'm sick"

Three people had taken their names off the list with no message. By 4 p.m. we were down to 26 people. Nearly half, felled by illness or whatever. Still 26 people is respectable, and we had fun and some great pies, though once again, despite making two taco pies, we nearly didn't have enough dinner pies. Every year we let the kids go first and they absolutely PIG OUT on portion sizes and by the time the adults are going through the line, the last few people get scrapings. So every year, I say "adults get to go first for desserts". We almost always have more dessert pies than dinner pies and this year was no exception. We had our two taco pies, a chicken pot pie, a spinach & feta pie, a "cowboy pie" (bacon & cheese) and a vegetarian pie that came a little late (more on that in a sec).

For dessert, we had the two fruit pizzas (one with a chocolate chip cookie base and one with a butterscotch cookie base), a pumpkin pie, THREE different blueberry pies, a peaches and cream, a strawberry pie and 2 kladdkakas (brownie pies).

YUM YUM. Guess who gained a kilo last week? *sigh*

The pies that came a little late were brought by... dbrus, along with her husband T and kids! They just moved to Sweden (for the third time, but down here this time) and are only about half an hour away...they live quite close to several of my long-term friends, in fact, and now I've gotten to meet another one of my Internet psychos friends!

The next day I had dinner with friends and Suzanne made a fantastic dinner of smoked salmon, green beans with a fabulous dill sauce, smashed potatoes and this:

Did you guess who gained a kilo last week? It's a stumper.

Aww I'm so sorry you had that many last minute cancellations (and those people who just took their name of the rsvp list without any explanation are just rude!). But it sounds like you had a lovely time regardless :)
How fun that dbrus has moved close to where you live now! I remember her from waaaay back, moving to Sweden and then back to the US I believe - wow 4 moves, all international? Sounds like hard work ha! :)

I agree! I don't think I would like to be moving back and forth so much...though maybe once or twice would be fun. :)

With kids in the equation we are staying put for a while now! :)

Ohh also, both pies look absolutely scrumptious!!

The cake wasn't from Pie Night but I assure it was just as scrumptious!

Holy cow! That chocolate cake with strawberries looks divine! It does sound like you had a fun time with Pie Night. I think it is so cool that you have all kinds of parties! I cannot imagine having the energy for that. I can barely serve my own family, much less anyone else!

Re: From Megsie

Pie Night is easy to host: everyone else brings the food. That's my kind of party!

YUMMMMMM! is all I have to say at the moment....drooling! Love, Lizardmom

They were definitely drool-worthy!

If those two pictures are at all representative of the pies at your house, I'd say it's no wonder you started out with 40+ people on the list. Yum!

The second photo is a cake that was served for dessert at a dinner the next day; nothing to do with Pie Night (but everything to do with that damn kilo)

I've seen the very first snow drops and crocus as well, plus the first barnacle geese arriving, so Mother Nature knows something is afoot. I gather it's going to be glorious for a few days, then colder again on the weekend. Typical April weather just a month early.

My mind is still boggling at FORTY EIGHT people! But I can understand if it's about pie. I wish I lived closer as I'd be there in a flash - we love pie. I'd also bring a dinner pie as I'm so not a dessert person and that chocolate cake does nothing for me. On the other hand, I've made your Taco Pie a few times now and it's always a hit - though I'm not sure it's worth a 1,000km round trip. The Swede would be giving me the hairy eyeball too.

There seems to be a lot of sickness around. I've had aspiration pneumonia (self inflicted, mostly), but almost everyone I know has has a nasty cold, winter vomiting sickness or some other nasty virus in their family. It's better that they stayed home rather than spread the germs. Even 26 people is a houseful!

Ahh... I see you found that kilo I lost. No need to return it :-)

How cool that Dawn and her family could come as well. There's nothing as good as meeting Internet friends. Have you met that American psycho in Flyinge yet?

Which American psycho in Flyinge? Is there another one?

Yay! To experience Casa de Ek and pie night was awesome! After years of drooling over pies and your hostess with the mostess skils I was actually there! Can't wait to see you guys again!

Yes, and with more time to sit and chat!!
